National Hangover Day: What to Do

All the New Year festivities are now finished, and one thing’s for sure – many of us are entering 2024 with a hangover! How were your New Year’s Eve celebrations? Hopefully, they were filled with all your favorite drinks. It only comes once a year, so we understand why you partied hard for this momentous day. January 1st is National Hangover Day for a reason after all. Here’s a few tips on how we push through it!

1. Sleep the right way!
You've probably been up all night since Christmas, and the drinking days have been ongoing since the season began. Well, this is the perfect time to catch up on sleep! Sleep away that nasty hangover to help relieve that uneasy feeling. Aim for a full 8 hours of sleep and let your body heal and recover from all the drinking festivities.

2. Always hydrate!
Before, during, and after consuming alcohol, drinking water is always a must! Consume water in between the booze to lessen its effects and have a big glass of water before you fall asleep. Water can help flush out the alcohol from your body, slowing the rate at which your body absorbs alcohol and maintaining a lower overall blood alcohol level. Drinking sports drinks are super helpful as well to replenish your electrolytes.

3. Get a big, healthy breakfast!
Experts say that carbohydrates and eggs can help relieve a hangover, so why not opt for a big, healthy breakfast instead? Since alcohol lowers blood sugar levels, it's essential to consume foods that can help stabilize it. Choose a nutritious breakfast with carbohydrates, protein, and fruits. Foods like whole-grain toast, eggs, and bananas can effectively replenish nutrients.

4. Grab your daily dose of caffeine!
No, we don’t mean that you should mix your coffee and alcohol at the same time. If you’re already a regular coffee drinker, don’t skip your coffee, as skipping it might further your headache due to caffeine withdrawal. But if you’re not, a mild tea can do the trick to give you the boost that you need! Drink this in moderation too, as too much coffee is not a good thing.

5. Take some pain relievers!
If hangover symptoms are unbearable, grab some over-the-counter pain relievers to get you through the day. Trusty ibuprofen can do the trick! Remember to take the right dose, and if it gets worse, call your doctor. It's always important to prioritize your well-being and seek professional advice for severe discomfort!
